Golf Coaching at The Hertsmere

We believe that coaching is about a consistent approach to improvement and development and our innovative programmes are built around the goals and objectives of the students, whereby time isn’t the key factor.

Coaching Philosophy

  • We want our students to benefit from the different levels of expertise of all of our coaches.
  • Coaching programs need to present great value whilst also being focused on your goals.
  • As coaches we must prove our credibility and therefore changes and improvements must be supported by fact.
  • We embrace technology because reliable data enables us to make appropriate decisions about your future.

Gavin Grenville-Wood
Director of Coaching & Development

Gavin joined The Hertsmere in June 2022 as our new Director of Coaching and Development. He will be leading a team of impassioned coaches who are driven to enhance players’ love for the game, through learning and developing new skills.

Last year Gavin became a Fellow of the PGA, an accolade awarded for his considerable knowledge, expertise and experience within the field of Coaching over the last 25 years; from the early years in the mid 90s where he developed his passion for coaching at a US based Academy program to the modern day where Gavin headed up Junior Education for Golfzon Leadbetter Academies before coming here.  Gavin’s knowledge in the field of development and participation is widely recognised within golf.

Gavin has been responsible for the creation and development of three Academies either side of the Atlantic, all with high levels of participation and engagement from kids and parents alike. Gavin’s experiences have led him to realise that increasing participation and creating sustainable coaching businesses comes down to educating coaches and empowering them with the skills and resources to be able to grow golf efficiently and effectively.

“Development is all about inspiring students to play for a lifetime, and the required levels of engagement to facilitate that comes from the consistent interactions that players have with learning and the acquisition of new skills and solutions.”

Gavin Grenville-Wood

Today, Gavin’s goal is to get as many kids and families playing the game as possible at The Hertsmere and it’s through the creation of a team of like-minded coaches that this can be facilitated.

Everyone that comes through The Hertsmere will get the opportunity to experience a 30-minute Assessment where one of our Coaches will watch you play, help you understand the concepts around the golf swing and finally establish your goals and objectives and figure out the best programme to help achieve those.  Click below to book your FREE ASSESSMENT

Darren Close                                                                                                                     PGA Coach & TPI (FIT 4 Golf) Qualified

Having played golf since I was twelve years old, I developed a passion for both coaching and playing. I love that golf is a unique challenge every day and I know I must be at my absolute best to overcome it. I love playing golf, and whilst I’m not especially competitive anymore, I have competed at a prominent level before recurring injuries hindered my performance

Having coached for ten years now, I have worked with players at all levels from beginners to elite, as well as players of all ages. Inspiring my students and watching them improve is what motivates me to be the best coach I can be whilst in the background I’m always learning and striving to improve myself as a coach and a golfer.

My role at The Hertsmere is to inspire and engage as many new golfers as possible, helping to grow our great game. For the existing or more experienced player, I want to reignite their passion for the sport by helping them improve and play better golf.  I look forward to seeing you soon at The Hertsmere.

Helen said, “It’s a game that everyone can enjoy, and I want to help them develop their own relationship with it.  Everyone can play at their own level, they don’t need to be a scratch player to enjoy it. I’m excited to begin my journey at The Hertsmere, it should be fun!”

  • Junior Golf Academy

The year-round Junior Academy provides a holistic approach to player development, split into two phases.

Phase One | 5-12 year olds

These are the foundational years where we focus on developing:

    • the person
    • the athlete
    • the golfer

Kids learn in their respective age groups (4-6, 7-9 & 10-12), with classes available mid-week and at weekends.  The philosophy is around creating an environment where the kids are safe, but also where they feel encouraged to be themselves and express themselves creatively.  By overcoming regular challenges, children embark on a journey of self discovery and exploration, guided by our expert team of coaches.  We want children to develop a strong relationship with learning, which means they’ll have lots of fun and enjoyment as they’re doing so.

Once you have purchased your subscription plan you then book in the sessions that suit you:

HJGA 46 is for the 4-6 year olds

HJGA 79 is for the 7-9 year olds

HJGA1012 is for the 10-12 year olds.

Since the classes have been created with an holistic approach, focusing on the development of golf skills, sports skills, and life skills, mixed-age classes are appropriate, but should be limited to developmental age bands. This will ensure that the developmental gap (cognitive, physical, and social-emotional) between ages is not too large that learning across ages is not impeded.

Phase Two | 12-18 years old

These are the developmental years, where the kids’ relationship with the sport changes and evolves. It becomes more results based, at which point they need to show the responsibility required to understand where they are on their journey and that they’re accountable for their own progress.

We coach based on what skills need to be developed, based on how they play.  Throughout this phase there is a strong emphasis on playing and becoming competitive.  Competition drives the thrift for more knowledge!  Part of the programme during this phase is that the kids will play weekly competitions.

The Junior Academy is a subscription based programme, effectively spreading the cost of the coaching and the activities over the course of the year.  We have three different levels of subscription to suit all scenarios, all providing different levels of service:

  • Masterclass Series

    Masterclass Series | Putting

    Price | £99.00 | Three Hours

We want to make you fall in love with putting, after all, it’s the club we use the most and its also the part of the game we practice the least.  We have a great opportunity to really impact your scores by putting better.

This is a three hour Masterclass designed to develop your putting skills with the ultimate goal of lowering your scores with a more efficient putting performance.  Throughout the three hours we will focus on the following areas:

    • the fundamentals of strike
    • speed control
    • green reading
    • aiming
    • making your practice more efficient

The Masterclass is conducted in groups of six, followed by lunch with your coach.

    Short Game Masterclass

    Price | £99.00 | Three Hours

The short game is the most fun and creative part of golf and like putting, it’s an area we don’t focus a whole lot on.  The greater the variety of shots you have in your locker, the greater the chances you have of making the right decision for the “short game” situation you find yourself in.

This is a three hour Masterclass designed to develop your putting skills with the ultimate goal of lowering your scores with a more efficient putting performance.  Throughout the three hours we will focus on the following areas:

    • short game fundamentals
    • understanding bounce
    • chipping solutions
    • pitching swing basics
    • distance control
    • trajectory

The Masterclass is conducted in groups of six, followed by lunch with your coach.

  • Holiday Golf Camps

Our Golf Olympics themed week-long camps provide kids with an exciting week of varied activities.  Whilst initially developing golfing skills in multiple areas, kids spend part of the week developing their physical literacy as well as their geography and cultures from countries all around the world.

First thing Monday morning, the kids are put into the countries that they’ll represent for the week.  During break times and lunch, they design their country’s flag and learn about the culture of their country in preparation for the opening ceremony of the golf olympics on the Friday Morning.

Explorer’s come from 9am-12pm and take part in games and challenges, with time provided for them to be creative and explorative in pursuit of overcoming these challenges.

The Adventurer’s Camp is from 9am-4pm and in addition to the morning activities, the kids are able to get out on to the golf course for a minimum of 9 holes in the afternoon.

The Golf Olympics is fun and exciting, with appropriate levels of competitions that inspires learning!

  • Girls Golf!

We’ve created a special programme for you! This five-week introduction to Golf is a great way to see if you like it.  By playing lots of different games and challenges, you’ll understand why we need to acquire certain skills in order to be successful.  The experiential environment we create allows the girls to be creative and to express themselves in pursuit of these solutions.  This all points to a more engage student, and one that is able to retain information far more readily.

We want the girls to have fun and to enjoy learning a new sport.  We have classes all year round, on week nights and on weekends, giving you the flexibility to complete your five weeks introduction to the sport.

  • Family Golf

You choose when you want to learn as one of our expert coaches guides you through learning different parts of the game.  We’ll take you out on the course, we’ll play games on the Top Tracer and we’ll break down the technical side of your swing in our Centre of Excellence, creating the perfect opportunities for you all to learn.

  • The ADHD Foundation | Umbrella Project

We’re excited to begin our relationship with the ADHD Foundation as we highlight the change in the perception of neurodiverse/neurodivergent people by celebrating all the many strengths that come from thinking differently.

The Neurodiversity Umbrella Project is an uplifting visual representation of all the different minds we have here in the UK and we are proud to do this in conjunction with our Professional Ambassador and ADHD Foundation Ambassador Joshua Grenville-Wood

Every Umbrella Project installation helps to raise awareness and understanding of neurodiversity.

Thousands of colourful umbrellas are strung together over public spaces, in schools, and in company buildings around the nation. Each display is designed to represent the one in five of us who have a neurodevelopmental condition, such as ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia or Tourette’s syndrome. These conditions fall under the umbrella term of neurodiversity.

In addition for us, this is also a metaphor for being open and inclusive, creating fun and safe environments for everyone to enjoy playing golf.

Enjoy the display in the reception area of our Driving Range and please get on touch if you want to learn more.

We offer specialist coaching for in this area, so please get in touch with Gavin for more details:
